Edges
“Lisières” (Edges)
We are conducting research into edges, spaces of transition and transformation. Edges border all landscapes. Much more than a line, they act as an intermediary between two environments, producing an ecotone and these zones are incredibly rich in biodiversity. We drew inspiration from the A.T.E.N.A garden, which is itself a border between a building and a public garden, to develop notions of reciprocity, interaction and porosity between creations and plants. This exploration has accompanied us in the very design of our works for the ‘Lisières’ exhibition and in the actions carried out in the garden. We are interested in the permeability of contexts: works from the exhibition are destined to be planted in gardens, constructions are reused in poetic and mimetic furniture, poetry is read in a natural space, ecofeminist references are transformed into installations and reading formats in the garden. The ‘edges’ become thresholds of transformation that emerge in a communicative state between us three creators, between the living and the works, between the different contexts. ‘Navigating the edges’ is a transformative experience, and we’re curious to discover new edges to explore, sow, observe, create in reciprocity, invent, transplant, imagine.

Exhibition Lisières
at La Chapelle du Quartier Haut
Sète, France 2023
Giving Taking (passage)
by Ulrike Bernard
appliqué, embroidery and stamp on textile, 4 x 2m
Flèche
textile filled with lavender and pine needles, 1.50 x 0.60m
On entering the exhibition, visitors move through the textile work Giving Taking (Passage). As they enter, they come into contact with the idea of reciprocity (of giving and receiving), which continues to unfold inside the exhibition space. The textile arrow, filled with Mediterranean scented plants such as lavender and pine needles, blocks a second entrance and indicates the direction of entry as well as the stamped words GIVING TAKING, which introduce the attitude of the exhibition. The exhibition Lisières is the conclusion of the three-year residency program A.T.E.N.A in Sète, in which a solidary network of exchange, give and take, was created between the invited artists, the director of the residency and the local (social) ecosystem.
INTERVIEW ULRIKE BERNARD " Geben und nehmen" (Giving Taking)
Lines of Life
by Ulrike Bernard
Installation
“For much of human’s time on the planet, before the great delusion, we lived in cultures that understood the covenant of reciprocity, that for the Earth to stay in balance, for the gifts to continue to flow, we must give back in equal measure for what we take.“ Robin Wall Kimmerer (Excerpt: Returning the Gift) The installation Lines of Life (Lisières) is placed in the middle of the former chapel La Chapelle du Quartier Haut like a boat on which visitors of the exhibition can take a seat and immerse themselves in an audio piece. They follow a vibrating vocal carpet of seagull cries, bumblebee buzzes, cicada chirps, pigeon cooing and a human voice, which is accompanied and blasted by percussive elements. „Joint forces, feedback loops, giving back, feed feed feed, giving back“ - this refers to the dynamic cycles of the biophysical world. In order to maintain life in ecosystems, in order to create balance, giving after taking is essential. Two scales rotate slowly and continuously in a circle, while on the quilts the scales also continue to move as a motif for justice and balance.
Lines of Life (Lisières) is inspired by the work of author and biologist Robin Wall Kimmerer.
An artistic reading of the text „Returning the Gift“ by Robin Wall Kimmerer took place in the A.T.E.N.A garden as part of a day program accompanying the exhibition.
Murmure Osmotique - Osmotic Whispering
by Kathrin Köster
ceramic sculptures, lacquered and inscribed plinths with poetic text fragments, ink and pastel
drawings
Murmure Osmotique - Osmotic Whispering is a ongoing series of ceramic objects in the form of vessels. According to the principle of the so-called “Ollas”, a very old and traditional method of garden irrigation, they are placed in the ground and filled with water. Despite their closed form, they remain an open system that nourishes the roots in their vicinity through the principle of osmose. More than 50% of the water consumption can be saved.
Genèse végétale / Plant Genesis
by Lise Chevalier
Genèse végétale is a triptych of large-format ink paintings on paper, designed for the Chapelle and laid out like an animist altarpiece. This triptych celebrates life through the ‘mythological co-invention’ with plants. Inspired by the A.T.E.N.A garden, this ensemble questions our founding narratives, and plunges us into a plant cosmogony.
