In our collaboration, we are very sensitive to the rhythm of nature. We’ve been watching plants transform themselves, and for the last three years we’ve been working with different seasons. The equinox is the time of year when day and night have the same duration. In many cultures, rituals and festivities celebrate the arrival of light and the awakening of nature. In March 2024, we took part in the Quinzaine de l’Allemagne en Occitanie (German Fortnight in Occitania) by devising an artistic ‘Equinox’ day in the rhythm of light. From sunrise (6.49am) to sunset (6.59pm). Over the course of the 12-hour day, four artistic formats were presented in succession, in the form of four chapters. A period of joint residency preceded this event: construction of an outdoor sculpture around the pine tree in the garden, design of a ceramic fresco, design of an outdoor installation of works on paper, development of artistic walks in the nearby landscape. We hope to continue these gatherings of shared immersion and celebration of the rhythm of nature by inventing new programes linked to the seasons, solstices and equinoxes.

Équinoxe - a day in the rhythm of light
Équinoxe I (6am - 8.30am)
Walk at sunrise: At 6am, walk to Mont Saint-Clair. At sunrise, at 6.49am, a personal ritual to welcome the light takes place on the mountain, accompagnied by a sharing round about memories of the arrival of spring.
Équinoxe II (9am- 2.30pm) Exhibition in the outdoor studio (Cabane) and in the garden.
Équinoxe III (2.30pm - 5pm) Workshop The Force Which Causes Mushrooms To Push Up From The Earth Overnight and inauguration of the outdoor sculpture Under The Arms O A Pine Tree (In Times Like These) by Ulrike Bernard.
Équinoxe IV (5pm - 6.59pm) Sunset walk - Walk to "Les Pierres Blanches" with poem readings, exercises in silence and drawings of the spring flowers.

An ode to the awakening of nature and the arrival of light, this ceramic fresco is inspired by the plant motifs in the Genèse végétale triptych.The lunar calendar corresponds to the month of March 2024 until the spring equinox. Made using colours found in the potters’ village of Santo Stefano Di Camastra during an artist residency in Sicily, the colours are derived from the majolica ceramic tradition. The artist is planning to create a ceramic fresco on an entire wall in the A.T.E.N.A garden.
Remonter la rivière de Kurotani Up the Kurotani River

Mirroring the ceramic fresco, a diurnal evocation linked to the return of light, this composition in indigo ink invokes natural forces linked to aquatic and lunar space. The title refers to the river in the paper-making village of Kurotani, in the mountains near Kyoto, which has been making washi from the bark of the kozo (mulberry) tree and the river water for 800 years. The artist set off to learn the techniques used to make this paper during the summer of 2023. Using the indigo used to dye washi, she is painting a mythology of this river and is currently preparing a new residency in Japan. She is interested in this traditional handcraft in harmony with nature, and is working on suspended installations that show the materiality of paper.

In relation to, relating to, in conjunction with. Textual inspirations of ecofeminists, biologists and environmental activists are mixed with personal memories and tranferred into textile works. They are part of installations and settings for artistic readings and are activated by the visitors within exhibitions.
The Force Which Causes Mushrooms To Push Up From The Earth Overnight
Dialogical reading Format by Ulrike Bernard
This dialogical reading format is dedicated to the emergent force or invisible energy that makes mushrooms shoot out of the ground. There is hardly a language in which there is a word for this living thrust. In a textual approach, the participants encounter the „words for life“, as botanist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer calls them. They explore how words influence our imagination and our ability to connect with the living world of which we are a part. From different perspectives, they take a literary (queer)feminist and botanical look at the world of mushrooms. In this dialogical reading format, the participants will share their thoughts and feelings in a mycelial way: starting from several reading directions, walking, multiplying and bringing them into the larger group network.
